Job Description Department: Nursing Title: OPD Head Nurse

JOB SUMMARY:
Provide direction and coordinates the activities of OPD clinics nursing to maintain proper professional and administrative procedures, and insure that the nursing objectives, policy and procedures are being implemented in OPD nursing clinics.
Responsibilities and duties:-
· Insure attendance and the punctuality of nursing
staff, according to (...................) policy.
·
Make sure patients are screened on arrival according to
specialty.
·
Ensure that consulting rooms are ready before the doctors
arrive for consultation.
· Make sure patients vital signs are done, including blood
sugar screening before the patients are directed to the consulting room.
·
Collaborate with the reception staff regarding patients with
appointments for specific specialties like surgery, diabetic clinic etc.
·
Make sure the patient’s files are collected on time from
Medical Record Department.
· Deploy nurses to assist doctors and stay with patients until
the doctor completes the consultation (especially with female patients).
· Provide assistance for patients who require other services
such as Phlebotomy and radiology etc.
· Make sure patients who needed assistance with wheel chair and
porters etc., are promptly and appropriately assisted.
·
Request needed supplies and equipments for unit.
·
Supervise documentation of staff nurses, and insure accuracy
of medical record.
· Participate
in department-specific orientation for new department
employees and learn about new clinical practices., to insure
safe practice for all nursing staff.
· Investigates and
resolves complaints and counseling of staff and refers unusual problems to
superior.
·
Collaborate with cashier in ensuring that consultation fees
are correctly charged.
·
Monitor the patient flow through the waiting area and ensure
proper sorting criteria.
·
Monitor the patient referral process (to ER or other
specialties) and document this.
· Make sure files are returned to Medical Records Department
before closing for the day.
· Participate in monthly executive
committees and update employees on emerging issues.
·
Hold monthly staff meetings and keep written minutes.
·
Create monthly staffing plans to ensure staffing levels and skill mix match patient care needs.
· Conduct an annual performance evaluation of
all probationers in cooperation with nursing education team.
· Assess learning needs of staff, and planning continuous
evaluation in collaboration of education department, keep training records for
each staff member.
· Report to the biomedical and maintenance department any
defective equipment and follow up until item is returned to unit.
· Helps with strategic planning by providing information, particularly resource planning.
Management Responsibilities:
· Be aware of the ambulance policy. Must know the objectives,
vision and mission statement of (...................).
· Must strive for excellence in health care delivery through
realization of the objectives at unit level.
· Know and respect the lines of authority according to the
nursing organization structure.
·
Direct and supervise unit nurses effectively.
· Has the authority to delegate her responsibilities to the AHN when not on duty.
Clinical Governance:
· Ensure accurate documentation
of all patient events and clinical interventions.
·
Audit patient care daily to ensure compliance with clinical
pathways.
·
Document and report all variances in expected clinical
outcomes.
· Monitor, investigate and document all sentinel \events as
part of Risk Management and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI’s).
·
Have knowledge of the following policies / protocols:
1.
Infection control
2.
Disaster plan.
3.
Code Blue policy.
4.
Fire and safety (Evacuation plan).
Qualification:
Professional Requirements:
· Must be registered with the Egyptian Nurses Union or Nursing Council or Association in country of
origin.
· Must practice nursing within the practice established by the Union of Egypt and
International Council o0f Nurses (ICN).
Education:
·
BSN,
Technical Institute or Diploma Nurse
·
With 3-5
years experience
Experience:
· At least
2-3 years experience as Head Nurse or assistant head nurse or charge nurse in
the same area of specialty.
Skills:
· Good English skill is important.
· Good communication skills and computer
literacy.
· Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.
· Critical thinking skills are necessary.
Training:
·
Must
attend 50 hrs of mandatory in-service training in a contractual year.
·
Uphold
and support the mission statement and vision of (...................).
·
BLS
certified, ACLS is preferred.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
·
Follow
the appropriate communication channels according to the
organizational chart of the department.
·
Must be able
to communicate effectively each orally and in writing.
·
Be able
to liaise with other members of the Heath Care Team and support services for
effective and efficient patient care.
·
Must be
innovative and have essential thinking skills.
·
Always
promote a good relationship in the unit to maintain
teamwork.
·
Act as
patient advocate and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
