Job Description Department: Nursing Title: Endoscopy Staff Nurse

Job Summary:
To provide professional nursing skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care for patients' undergoing endoscopic procedures.
Responsibilities and duties:
Before the procedure (Preparation
duties):
1) Receives the unit’s keys from
security department.
2) Preparation of Endoscopy room.
3) Checking of the scopes and all
equipment for disinfection and sterilization.
4) Checking the scopes, electrical
cords and their function.
5) Checking the medical supplies and other consumables.
6) Charging and replacing the used
items.
7) Checking and Recording narcotics
as per narcotic policy.
8) Prepare the emergency trolley at the beginning and end of the shift.
During the procedure:
· Prepare the scope and make sure of
its efficiency.
· Receive the patient from the
recovery room nurse with:
1) Peripheral cannula.
2) Hospital gown.
3) Signed consent.
4) Correct armband.
5) Check the Enema was given in
case of proctoscopy and colonoscopy.
· Prepare the patient for the
procedure.
· Prepare and assist with
administration of drugs.
· Maintain patient’s position.
· Maintain mouth guard.
· Clinically monitors patient and
reports changes to physician.
· Documentation.
After the procedure:
· Receive the scope from the doctor.
· Suction the scope thoroughly to
remove residual body fluids and check it for leakages.
· Sterilize the scope according to
the technique of sterilization.
· Supervise cleaning of the endoscopy
room and disinfection of all washable areas.
· Keep the scopes in their place
(Cabinet and close it).
Charge for all consumables.
· Lock the Endoscopy room, hand keys over to security.
Educational Responsibilities:
Under
the direction of the top nurse & Clinical teacher the nurse will:

Contribute to the identification of
coaching wants pertinent to the clinical area.
·
Participate within the clinical induction of all new nursing and support staff.
·
Develop the leadership skills to act as an effective role model.
·
Take responsibility for their own learning and development needs.
·
Attend all required in-services training
programs.
·
Keep up with necessary training such as Basic Life Support (BLS).
·
Know the following protocols:
-
Disaster Policy.
-
Code blue policy.
-
Fire safety policy.
-
Infection
control policies.
Skills :
· Ability
to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies and
other life threatening situations, Stress.

Knowledge
of Endoscopy treatment, procedures, facilities and equipment.
·
Knowledge
of adjunct care principles and techniques.
·
Ability
to perform accurate nursing assessments.
·
Ability
to meet quality, safety and infection control standards.
· Ability to educate patients and / or families regarding the nature of disease/condition and to provide instructions on proper care and treatment (in keeping with nurse/patient privileges).
Communication and Interpersonal skills:
·
Follow the appropriate communication channels according to the organizational chart
of the department.
·
Must be ready to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
·
Maintain professional appearance and dress
code.
·
Wear Identification badge when working.
·

Must be innovative and have essential thinking skills.
· Always promote good rapport in the unit to maintain teamwork.
Dress Code:

Education:
·
B.S.N,
Technical institute of nursing or credentials in nursing.
· Post graduate endoscopy certificate (an advantage).
Experience:
· 1 years’ experience in Endoscopic Department is preferable.
Training:
·
Must be
registered with the Egyptian Syndicate or Nursing Council/Association of
country of origin.
·
Must
attend 50 hrs. of mandatory in-service training in a contractual year.
·
Uphold

BLS
certification is mandatory.
