Reports To:

AreaSupervisor, House supervisor. 

Accountable to:

Area Supervisor, House supervisor ACNO, CNO

Position summary:

     The Endoscopy head nurse is the personnel who supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the effectiveness of nursing activities, and ensure a safe environment of care. She works collaboratively with the physician and the anesthesia health care providers to determine patient needs during Endoscopic and GI procedures. Endoscopy head nurse have a role in scrub duties performed in the Department.

Responsibilities and duties :

  1.      Insure attendance and the punctuality of nursing staff, according to (.........) policy.
  2.      Providing a high level of nursing service within the hospital policy.
  3.      Insure accurate assessment and reassessment of the patients.
  4.      Make duties and assignments depending on staff knowledge and skills, to provide a high standard of nursing service within the hospital’s policy.
  5.    Oversee the effective, efficient use of Endoscopic equipment and materials, by Accomplish routine safety checks and monitor maintenance of all endoscopic & ERCP equipment in the unit.
  6.      Insure the correct application of sterilization for all equipment.
  7.    Supervise effective use of identification by accurate labeling and handling of specimen of the patients.
  8.      Identifies emergency situations and institutes corrective actions in efficient manner.
  9.      Supervise documentation of staff nurses, and insure accuracy of medical record. 
  10.    Request needed supplies and equipment for unit, and ensure downloading of the supplies to insure effective, efficient use of equipment and materials.
  11.        Participate in department-specific orientation of new department employees and learn about new clinical practices., to insure safe practice for all nursing staff.
  12.        Investigates and resolves complaints and counseling of staff and refers unusual problems to superior.
  13.        Conduct staff meetings on a monthly basis and keep written minutes.
  14.        Create monthly staffing plans to ensure staffing levels and skill mix match patient care needs.
  15.        Participate in monthly leadership committees and educate employees on new topics.
  16.        Do probationary and yearly performance appraisal of all staff with the collaboration of nursing office.
  17.        Assess learning needs of staff, and planning continuous education in collaboration of education department.
  18.         Ensure staff implements the procedures for charging patients in the required time frame.
  19.        Maintain unit records on clinical and other data and submit reports.
  20.        Helps with strategic planning by providing information, particularly resource planning.

Management Responsibilities:

·       Must know the objectives, vision and mission statement of (.........).

·  Must strive for excellence in health care delivery through realization of the objectives at unit level.

·   Know and respect the lines of authority according to the nursing organization structure.

·       Direct and supervise unit nurses effectively.

·       Has the authority to delegate her responsibilities to the AHN when not on duty.

Clinical Governance:

·       Ensure accurate documentation of all patient events and clinical interventions.

·       Audit patient care daily to ensure compliance with clinical pathways.

·       Document and report all variances in expected clinical outcomes.

·     Monitor, investigate and document all sentinel /events as part of Risk Management and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI’s).

·       Have knowledge of the following policies / protocols:

1.    Infection control

2.    Disaster plan.

3.    Code Blue policy.

4.    Fire and safety (Evacuation plan).

Qualification :

Professional Requirements:

  1.        Must be registered with the Egyptian Nurses Union or Nursing Council or Association in country of origin.
  2.        Must practice nursing within the practice established by the Union of Egypt and International Council o0f Nurses (ICN).

Education:

     ·       BSN, Technical Institute or Diploma Nurse

     ·       With 3-5 years’ experience

Experience:

     ·       At least 2-3  years’ experience as Head Nurse or assistant head nurse or charge nurse  in the same area of specialty

Skills:

     ·       Good English skill is important.

     ·       Good communication skills and computer literacy.

     ·       Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.

     ·       Critical thinking skills are necessary.  

Training:

     ·       Must attend 50 hrs. of mandatory in-service training in a contractual year.

     ·       Uphold and support the mission statement and vision of (.........).

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

   ·   Follow the appropriate communication channels according to the organizational chart of the department.

     ·       Must be ready to communicate effectively each orally and in writing.

     ·    Be able to liaise with other members of the Heath Care Team and support services for effective and efficient patient care.

     ·       Must be innovative and have vital thinking skills.

     ·       Always promote a good relationship in the unit to maintain teamwork.

     ·       Act as patient advocate and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
