Reports to:

Head Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, ADON &DON

Job summary:

     Assist the OPD head nurse to provide direction and coordinates the activities of the OPD clinics to maintain proper professional and administrative procedures to meet the (...........) nursing standards according to the Joint commission international accreditation (JCIA). Participates in planning & implementation of integrated preventive –curative nursing care programs ensuring that hospital and nursing objectives, standards of nursing care and practices, policies & procedures are being implemented in the OPD clinics nursing unit.

Responsibilities and duties :-

·       Make sure patients are screened on arrival according to specialty.

·       Ensure that consulting rooms are ready before the doctors arrive for consultation.

·  Make sure that the patients' vital signs are obtained, including blood sugar screening before the patients are directed to the consulting room.

·  Collaborate with the reception staff regarding patients with appointments for specific specialties like surgery, diabetic clinic etc.

·  Make sure the patient’s files are collected on time from Medical Record Department.

·     Deploy nurses to assist doctors and stay with patients until the doctor completes the consultation (especially with female patients).

·       Provide assistance for patients who require other services such as Phlebotomy and radiology etc.

·    Make sure patients who needed assistance with wheel chair and porters etc., are promptly and appropriately assisted.

·       Be aware of the ambulance policy.

·       May be deployed in other departments if the need arises.

          ·       Provides your staff with practical clinical guidance on patient care issues according to                             guidelines and procedure guidelines of the department.

·      Ongoing monitoring of the quality of patient care.

·      Assist the head nurse in preparing monthly staff schedules, ensuring staffing levels and skills mix meet patient care needs in the absence of the head nurse.

·      Ensure hospital policies and procedures are current and adhered to.

  • Assist Head Nurse to provide in-service and unit orientation in collaboration with Nurse Educator & Clinical Instructor.

Management Responsibilities:

· Meet daily with the head nurse or area supervisor (in the absence of the head nurse) to discuss area matters.

·   Liaise with support services regarding area hygiene.

· Assist the head nurse in doing monthly supplies inventory and compare with balance in computer to ensure correct charging of supplies.

·   Collaborate with cashier in ensuring that consultation fees are correctly charged.

·  Monitor the patient flow through the waiting area and ensure proper sorting criteria.

·  Prepare training program with assistance of the education department.

·  Keep training records for each employee.

·  Do performance appraisals for probation period and annual performance appraisals in the absence of the head nurse.

· Counsel Nurses as required and document same, refer to education department as necessary in the absence of the head nurse.

·  Monitor the patient referral process (to ER or other specialties) and document this.

·  Make sure files are returned to Medical Records Department before closing for the day.

            ·   Keep daily statistics and submit them to DON on daily basis in the absence of                   the  head nurse.

Educational Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Clinical instructor the nurse will:

       ·  Assist the head nurse and the clinical instructor to provide a comprehensive orientation program for all new staff and assist in evaluating their performance at the end of their probationary period.

       ·  He continues to improve his own clinical knowledge and skills by treating his own patients care and reading the current Nursing literature provided.

       ·    Develop teaching skills and participate in the planning implementation of orientation and teaching programs for new nurses in the clinical setting.

      · Promotes staff participation in Continuing Education and updates their knowledge & skills by completing the set number of hours required as per the Nursing Education Department policy.

     · Provide feedback to the head nurse & Clinical instructor in the compilation of proficiency assessments for new nurses in the clinical setting.

          ·         Contribution to the determination of the training needs relevant to the clinical area.

          ·         Participate within the clinical induction of all new nursing and support staff.

          ·         Develop the leadership skills to act as an effective role model.

          ·         Take duty to your very own studying and improvement needs.

          ·         Attend all required in-services training programs.

       ·    Keep up to date with mandatory training such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and (ACLS) if possible.

Interpersonal Skills / Communication:

·      Use the proper chain of command on all nursing related matters.

·  Communicate to Head Nurse and Supervisors problems experienced at Unit level with staff, patients, and visitors and propose remedial action.

·     Is a role model for good interpersonal relationships which other departments

·     Promote effective working relationships between Unit staff and support services staff.

·      Follow-up on identified security problems.

·       Must have critical thinking skills.

Professional  Development:

·    Ensure compulsory educational lectures are attended by self and staff in the unit.

·     Attend management in – service lectures.

·     Assist the Head Nurse to identify the educational needs of staff and coordinates with the nursing education Department.

Qualifications:

Education:

·       Bachelor of Nursing or Technical institute of nursing.

·       Primary Health Care Qualification an advantage.

Experience:

·       3 years experience, 1 year of them as Head Nurse in Primary Health Care or OPD is preferable.

Dress Code:

·       According to (......) Policy.

Required competencies:

         1-    Vital Signs.

         2-    12 Leads ECG.

         3-    Narcotic Handling.

         4-    Blood Glucose Monitoring.

          5-    Blood Extraction.

          6-    Blood Transfusion.

          7-    Arterial Puncture.

           8-    Central Venous Pressure Readings.

           9-    Obtaining Blood Sample From C-V Line.

10- I.V Cannulation.

11- Insertion of Nasogastic Tube.

12- Enteral Feeding Via Nasogastic or Gastrostomy Tube.

13- Change Of Dressing.

14- Medication Administration.

15- Suction

16- Collection of Urine Specimen From Catheter.
