Job description for Staff Nurse Oncology

Reports to:

Head Nurse

Accountable to:

Head Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, ADON &DON

Job Summary:

    Oncology staff nurses provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the center of all they do.

The staff nurse working within the Oncology Unit is responsible for the delivery of a high standard of patient focused care.

Responsibilities and duties:

·       Create outgoing shift report at end of shift.

     ·     Check all sufferers with the preceding shift nurse.

     ·     Provide direct care to assigned patients.

     ·   To paintings inside a multidisciplinary crew to make sure that sufferers receiving.

  ·     Chemotherapy have constant access to specialized treatment, knowledge and experience.

    ·  The administration of prescribed cytotoxic chemotherapy to oncology patients via cannula, C.V.L or Portacath as per (..............) protocol.   · Take medical history, summarize data and establish nursing diagnoses/patient care needs.

    ·    Provide written information about treatment and side effects information as appropriate

    · Observe and record signs& symptoms of chemotherapy side effects and how to manage them as extravasation.

    ·    Ensure safe and effective care for patients receiving radiation therapy, and work within the hospital rules for radiation protection.

    ·    Be familiar with using all technological equipments in the oncology ward as infusion pumps.

    ·   Provide specific care interventions to assigned patients consistent with achievements medical plan of care.

  · Perform admission, discharge and switch techniques and help others with affected person activities.

  ·      Carry out physician orders for all assigned patients; Administer medication safely and appropriately and treatments.

  ·      Performing or assisting others in performing proper aseptic techniques, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.

     ·       Document nursing care in all assigned affected person statistics.

  ·  Maintain affected person's privateness and confidentiality of records and statistics in any respect times.

     ·       Evaluate care given consisting of the affected person response.

     ·       Demonstrate ability to assess patient understanding and compliance and health care teaching.

     ·      Establish dedicated clinical pathways for management in collaboration with the Department of Education specific conditions in the unit.

     ·       Know the following protocols:

-        Disaster Policy.

-        Code blue policy.

-        Fire safety policy.

-        Infection control policies.

Educational Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Chief Nurse and Clinical Instructor, the Nurse will:

     ·         Contribute to the identification of training needs relevant to the clinical field.

     ·         Participate in the clinical orientation of all new nurses and support staff.

     ·         Develop leadership skills to set an example, stay effective.

     ·         Take duty on your very own studying and improvement needs.

     ·         Attend all required in-services training programs.

     ·         Keep up to date with required training such as Basic Life Support (BLS).

Communication and Interpersonal skills:

· Follow the appropriate communication channels according to the department's organizational chart.

·         Must be capable of talk correctly each orally and in writing.

          ·         Maintain professional appearance and dress code.

          ·         Wear Identification badge when working.

·         Observe absence or tardiness policies.

·         Must be innovative and ready to assume critically.

·         Always promote smart rapport within the unit to take care of teamwork.

Education:

·       BSN or Technical Institute of Nursing and Technical Institute health care or Diploma in Nursing.

·       Post graduate oncology certificate (an advantage).

Experience:

·       1 years’ experience in oncology department is an advantage.

Training:

·       Must be registered with the Egyptian Syndicate or Nursing Council/Association of country of origin.

·       Must attend 50 hrs of mandatory in-service training in a contractual year.

·       Uphold and support the mission statement and vision of (..............)

·       BLS certified.  

Dress Code:

·       According to (..............) Policy.

Required Competencies:

All of basic nursing competency in addition to the following specific competency:

     1-    Chemotherapy Administration.

     2-    Port Cath Needle Insertion.

3-   Port Cath Needle Removing.
