Reports to:

Job Summary:

Pain management head nurse is the personnel who supervise and evaluate a variety of nursing activities related to pain management, to effectively provide high quality of patient care; head nurse has three main roles: Patient care management to insure that patient pain management needs are met. Staff management, to guide and evaluate and correct staff nurses in their nursing practice, Unit management to insure smooth running of process to fulfill the hospital goals.

Responsibilities and duties:

·       Insure attendance and the punctuality of nursing staff, according to (......) policy.

·       Receive, coordinate and track all orders, diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests and examinations required by the patient to ensure the high quality of patient care and the efficiency of services.

·       Make nurses duties and assignments according to (......) policy, to provide a high standard of nursing service within the hospital’s policy.

·       Attend daily patients’ rounds with assigned staff to ensure that staff implements all nursing procedures, duties, and patients' pain management is carried out as directed in accordance with physician's instructions.

·       Monitor medication preparation, and administration, and Ensure safe protection of medications and narcotics according to (......) policy. And reporting medication errors.

·       Request needed supplies and equipment’s for unit, and Ensure staff downloads the supplies correctly to insure effective, efficient use of equipment and materials.

·       Supervise documentation of staff nurses, and insure that all documentations are accurate, and completed according to (.....) policy

·       Accompany the doctor on visits and keep up to date with special orders from patients.

·       Learn and teach new clinical practices.

·       Participate in department-specific orientation for new department employees and learn about new clinical practices to ensure safe practice for all nurses.

·       Participate in monthly leadership committees and educate employees on emerging issues.

·       Investigates and resolves complaints or escalates unusual problems to a supervisor.

·       Hold monthly staff meetings and keep written minutes.

·       Attend staff performance evaluation, implement remedial action as indicated.

·       Assess staff learning needs and plan ongoing assessment in collaboration with Education Department.

·       Provide a high level nursing service within hospital policy.

·       Demonstrate advanced nursing care of pain management by applying evidence based care practice.

·       Continuously observe and monitor the quality of patient care.

·       Is a clinical and administrative resource person for staff, must learn and teach new clinical practices.

·       Ensure safe custody of medications and narcotics according to (......) policy.

·       Prepare monthly staffing plans and ensure staffing levels and skill mix match patient care needs.

·       Ensure hospital policies and procedures are current and adhered to.

·       Process leaves requests in a timely manner and in accordance with hospital policy.

·       Oversee the effective, efficient use of equipment and materials.

·       Attend staff performance evaluation. Implement remedial action as indicated.

·       Counsel staff as necessary, verbally and in writing maintaining the necessary documentation in accordance with hospital policy.

·       Ensure staff implements the procedures for charging patients in the required time frame.

·       Maintain unit records on clinical and other data and submit reports to DON.

·       Accomplish routine safety checks and monitor preventive maintenance of all medical equipment in the unit/floor in collaboration with Biomed Engineers.

Management Responsibilities:

·        Must know the objectives, vision and mission statement of (......).

·       Must strive for excellence in health care delivery through realization of the objectives at unit level.

·       Know and respect the lines of authority according to the nursing organization structure.

·       Direct and supervise unit nurses effectively.

·       Has the authority to delegate her responsibilities to the AHN when not on duty.

Clinical Governance:

·       Ensure accurate documentation of all patient events and clinical interventions.

·       Audit patient care daily to ensure compliance with clinical pathways.

·       Document and report all variances in expected clinical outcomes.

·       Monitor, investigate and document all sentinel \events as part of Risk Management and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI’s).

·       Have knowledge of the following policies / protocols:

1.    Infection control

2.    Disaster plan.

3.    Code Blue policy.

4.    Fire and safety (Evacuation plan).

Qualification:

Professional Requirements:

       ·   Must be registered with the Egyptian Nurses Union or the Nursing Council or                     Association of the country of origin.

       ·    Must practice nursing within the scope specified by the International Council of                 Nurses (ICN) and the Egyptian Union.

Education:

       ·   BSN, Technical Institute or Diploma Nurse

       ·   With 3-5 years’ experience

Experience:

       ·   At least 2-3 years’ experience as Head Nurse or assistant head nurse or charge nurse in the same area of specialty

Skills:

       ·       Good English skills are important.

       ·       Good communication skills and computer literacy.

       ·       Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.

       ·       Critical thinking skills are necessary.

Training:

           ·       Must attend 50 hrs. of mandatory in-service training in a contractual year.

·       Paramedic Certificate an advantage.

·       Must have BLS accreditation, adult and pediatric (ACLKS an advantage).

·       Membership with an organization of International Emergency Nurse Practitioners an advantage.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

       ·    Follow the appropriate communication channels according to the organizational                 chart of the department.

       ·    Must be able to both orally and in writing communicate effectively.

       ·     Be Able to communicate with other healthcare team members and support services           for  effective and efficient patient care.

       ·     Must be have critical thinking skills, crises management and innovative.

       ·     Always foster a good relationship in the department to maintain teamwork.

       ·     Act as patient advocate and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

Dress Code:

Required competencies:

All basic nursing competencies.

1-    Vital Signs.

2-    12 Leads ECG.

3-    Narcotic Handling.

4-    Blood Glucose Monitoring.

5-    Blood Extraction.

6-    Blood Transfusion.

7-    Arterial Puncture.

8-    Obtaining Blood Sample From C-V Line.

9-    I.V Cannulation.

10-     Central Venous Pressure Readings.

11-  Insertion of Nasogastic Tube.

12-  Enteral Feeding Via Nasogastic or Gastrostomy Tube.

13-  Change Of Dressing.

14-  Medication Administration.

15-  Suction.
