Job description for OR Head Nurse


Reports to:

OR Supervisor

Accountable to:

OR Supervisor, ACNOCNO.

Collaborates with:  

Infection control Team, Quality Team, All HOD’s 

Responsibilities and duties:

·       Complies with operating room and hospital guidelines at all times.

·       Responsible for the storage and care of narcotics from 08:00 am to 18:00 p.m. (end of shift) and give it to the head nurse beforehand until leaving the operating room.

·       Evaluate the process in OR by coordinating between the circulating nurses and scrub nurses.

·       Responsible for keeping the instruments in good condition by coordinating with the CSSD team.

·       Receive and check equipment to and from the Bio-med department.

·       Liaise with recovery room receiving and transferring patient to and from the floors.

·       Preparation of the nursing schedule as well as responsible for full coverage of roses in the absence of one individual.

·       Participate in mentoring new staff during probation period.

·       Assist O.R supervisor in doing staff performance appraisals for probation period and yearly performance appraisals.

·       Assist in advising staff in collaboration with the education team.

·       Prepare training plan of OR staff with the collaboration of the education team.

·       Maintain training records for all operating room staff.

·       Contact stores for consumables and all Consumables.

·       Monitor the charging progress of all consumables and devices.

·       Maintain until records of clinical and other data and submit reports to OR Supervisor.

·       Maintain accurate records of Surgery Statistics for discussion in OR users meeting.

·       Keep accurate attendance records for surgeons.

·       Act as a supervisor in case the absence of the OR supervisor.

Clinical Governance:

·       Assess patients for potential intraoperative and postoperative risks.

·       Monitor the progress of procedures in OR and length of time patient under GA.

·       Monitor, registered and document all emergency procedures, including emergency blood transfusions.

·        Ensure surgical procedures are properly documented in the intraoperative record.

·       Ensure correct protocols are followed when counting instruments (Part of OR Risk Management) to prevent errors.

·       Ensure all Consent forms are correct prior to putting patient under anesthesia or giving sedation.

·       You must have a reasonable understanding of the following policies:

1) Infection Control Policy.

2) Code Blue Policy.

3) Blood Transfusion (including emergency transfusion) policy.

4) Risk Management protocols (including patient safety indicators).

5) Fire and safety policy.

6) Disaster policy.

Competencies:

Education:

·       BSN or equivalent internationally accredited qualification.

·       Post graduate qualification in theatre technique.

 Experience:

·       Minimum past experience of 5 years in the same position in OR.

Training:

·       BLS accreditation mandatory.

·       Must be registered with the Egyptian Syndicate of Nurses and/or registration body of country of origin.

·       Practice nursing according to the scope of practice as defined by the Syndicate and International Council of Nurses.

·       Membership with the International Association of Theatre Nurses an advantage.

 Skills: -

·       Use the proper chain of command on all nursing related matters.

·       Assist OR Supervisor in conducting staff meetings on a monthly basis and keep written minutes of all meetings.

·       Communicate to OR Supervisor problems experienced at unit level with staff, patients, visitors and proposed remedial actions.

·       Is a role model for good interpersonal relationship with other departments?

·       Promote effective working relationship with OR staff and other hospital staff.

·       Follow-up on identified security problems.

·       Process leave request in a timely manner and in accordance with hospital policy.

 Professional Development and skills:

·       Ensure compulsory educational lectures are attended by self and staff in the unit (50 hours’ mandatory attendance).

·       Attend management in-service lectures.

·       Identifies the educational needs of staff and coordinates with the Nursing Education Department.

·       Conducts in-service Education for OR on a regular basis.

·       Good communication skills.

·       Critical thinking skills.

·       Good organizational skills and leadership qualities.
