Job Description Department: Nursing Title: OR Anesthesia Nurse
Reports to:
Collaborates with:
Anesthesiology Team.
Responsibilities and duties:
· Nursing Practice / Patient Care:
· Provide one on one patient care before, during and
after anesthesia.
· Check the patient’s documents for all laboratory
test results, radiology test results, and relevant information data.
· Check medications and other anesthetic supplies
daily and between cases.
· Assist with monitoring of fluid intake to maintain
adequate hydration.
· Evaluate and monitor anesthetic risks and notify
Anesthetist of findings.
· Develop own anesthesia care plan and co-ordinate
with Anesthetist in charge.
· Check blood with anesthetist during intra-operative
transfusion.
· Assist during autologous transfusion by making sure
the procedure is done according to the standard for collecting blood especially
in trauma emergencies.
· Make sure the obstetric theatre is prepared for
receiving the baby with resuscitate at correct temperature and neonatal suction
apparatus ready.
· Do post anesthesia evaluation prior to transferring
the patient to PACU.
· Document all interventions in Anesthesia, including
medications, doses and times given in collaboration with anesthetist.
· Collaborate with the scrub nurse and head nurse in
checking patients thought the period of OR activities.
· Integrate the service with the Anesthetic Technician.
· Ensure supplies are charged accurately for
anesthesia.
Clinical Governance:
· Ensure accurate documentation of anesthesia events.
· Ensure Risk management protocols are observed
(patient safety indicators) e.g. prevention of diathermy burns.
· All anesthesia documentation must be completed
including emergency blood transfusion requests.
· All narcotics must be accurately documented
according (...) policy.
· Ensure that patient’s operative data is checked
prior to starting anesthesia.
· Have a clear understanding of the following
policies:
1) Code blue policy and neonatal resuscitation
policy.
2) Disaster policy.
3) Fire and safety policy.
4) Risk management protocols.
5) Infection control policies.
· Make sure the documentation is completed prior to
transferring the patient to PACU or critical care unit.
Competencies:
Education:
BSN graduate,
Technical institute.
Training:
· Post graduate training as anesthesia nurse
desirable.
· Membership of society of anesthesia nurses an
advantage.
· Applied pharmacology training an advantage.
· Must be registered with the Egyptian Syndicate or
Nursing Council/Association of country of origin.
Skills:
· Use the proper chain of command on all nursing
related matters.
· Communicate to OR manager all matters related to an
aesthesia.
· Is a role model for good interpersonal
relationships which other departments?
· Promote effective working relationships between anesthesia
team and other theatre users.
· Good communication skills are necessary.
· Critical thinking skills required.
