Job Description Department: Nursing Title: Kidney Transplant Staff Nurse
Reports to:
Charge nurse, AHN and Head Nurse.
Accountable to:
Head Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, and ACNO,CNO.
Job Summary:
The kidney
transplant nurse provides total nursing care to patients
donate and receives kidney. The staff nurse working within the kidney transplant
is responsible for the delivery of a high standard of patient focused care by administers all treatments,
medications, maintains complete accurate records of nursing assessments and nursing
care, assists the medical team pre-operative and post-operative
care, also has
expertise in recognizing and monitoring patient’s complications like rejection.
Responsibilities and duties:

Apply kidney
transplantation clinical pathways.
· Conduct admission,
discharge and transfer procedures and assist others with activities and patient
care.
·
Provide information
to patient and family about the patient care.
·
Check the
proper signatures on donor documents.
· worked with
patients and donors to establish a daily routine of care after they received a transplant
or donated
· Maintain
the confidentiality of patient information and records at all times.
· Collect medical
histories, summarize data, and identify patient nursing diagnoses/needs.
· Observe and
record signs, symptoms, and behaviors, including the physiological status of patient.
·
Provide immediate
Post-operative care
· Observe and record vital signs. The vital sign is very important in checking the
general status of the patient. A change in vital signs may mean infection or early
signs of rejection
· Ensure safe and effective care for patients, provide care for
patient have different drains, tubes and lines
· Observe and record intake and
output to evaluate fluid and electrolyte balances.
· Close attention
to the output in the drainage attached to the patient post operatively.
· Monitor signs
of volume overload and administer diuretics as ordered.
· Monitor signs
and symptoms of bleeding.
· Execute doctor's
orders for all assigned patients; Administer medications and treatments safely and
appropriately.
· Perform or
assist others to perform proper aseptic techniques, and infection control measures.
· Monitor and
report lab results.
· Provide patient
with diet as per nutritional consultation.
· Administer
blood products as ordered.
· Be familiar
with using all technological equipments in the kidney transplant unit as mechanical
ventilator, cardiac monitor, infusion pumps, and defibrillator.
· Document
nursing care provide to patient in all assigned patient file.
· Evaluate
the care provided, including patient response.
· Demonstrate
ability to assess patient understanding and compliance, and teach healthcare.
· Encourage
Range of motion exercises to maintain existing strength, which improve the patient's
rehabilitation process post-transplantation.
· Teach the
patient to stay away from sick people to avoid risk of acquiring infections
· Teach the
patient to how avoid over-the-counter medications.
· Provide information
to patient and family about the patient home care.
· Know the following protocols:

Educational Responsibilities:
Under the
direction of the head nurse and the clinic the trainer, the nurse:
· Participate in the clinical integration of all new
nurses and auxiliaries.
· Develop leadership skills to function effectively
a role model.
· take responsibility for their own development needs
and learning.
· Attend all required in-services training programs.
· Wherever possible, stay current with required training such as Basic Life
Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
· Ability to prioritize and work independently.
· Have skills for Judgment to make clinical decisions independent.
· Ability to work quickly, factually, timely effectively and accurately under
pressure.
· Utilize knowledge of medications, indications, dosage ranges, side effects,
and potential toxicity
Communication and Interpersonal skills:
· Follow the appropriate communication channels as
per the department's organizational chart.
· Should be able to communicate, accurately and effectively
both orally and in writing.
· Maintain professional appearance and dress code.
· Wear Identification badge when working.
· Follow no-show or late arrival policy.

Qualifications:
Education:
·
B.S.N, BTN, Technical institute of nursing.
Experience:
·
1-year kidney transplant experience is preferred.
·
Work in an
ICU or related area that will give nurse specific skills necessary to go into transplant
nursing.
Training:
· Must be registered with the Egyptian
Nurses Union and/or Professional Origin Registration Body.
· Attend kidney transplant education
Program.
·
50 hours
of training per year is obligatory
·
BLS certification
is obligatory and ACLS is preferred.
