Reports to:

Area Supervisor, House supervisor.

Accountable to:

Area Supervisor, House supervisor, DON and ADON.

 Job Summary:

 Head nurse supervises and evaluates a variety of nursing activities to effectively provide high quality of oncology patients' care; in terms of courtesy, kindness, efficiency and effectiveness. 

 Head nurse has three main roles: patient care management to insure that patient total needs are met, staff management to guide and evaluate and correct staff nurses in their nursing practice, unit management to insure it smooth running to fulfill the hospital goals.

Duties And Responsibility

·   Insure attendance and the punctuality of nursing staff, according to (..................) policy.

· Receives, coordinates and follows up on all orders, diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests and research required for the patient, to insure high quality of patient care and efficiency of services.

·     Make nurses duties and assignments with proper ratio depending on acuity level of the patient, and staff knowledge and skills, and according to (..................) policy, to provide a high Standard care service within hospital policy.

·    Attend daily patients’ rounds with assigned staff to ensure that staff implements all nursing procedures, duties, and patients care is carried out as directed in accordance with physician's instructions.

·    Monitor medication preparation, and administration, and Ensure safe protection of medications and narcotics according to (..................) policy. And reporting medication error

·    Request needed supplies and equipments for unit, and Ensure staff downloads the supplies correctly to insure effective, efficient use of equipment and materials.

·   Supervise documentation of staff nurses, and insure that all documentations are accurate, and completed according to (..................) policy.

·       Coordinate admission, transfer of patient in and out of department with other departments, to insure continuity of care.

·       Accompany doctor on visits and keeps abreast of special orders from patients.

·       Participate in department-specific orientation for new department employees and learn about new clinical practices, to insure safe practice for all nursing staff.

·Participate inmonthly leadership committees and update employees on emerging issues.

·       Investigates and resolves complaints or escalates unusual issues to the higher.

·       Conduct monthly appraisal interviews and keep written minutes.

·    Create monthly staffing plans to ensure staffing levels and skill mix match patient care needs.

·       Attend staff performance evaluation, implement remedial action as indicated.

·  Assess staff learning needs and plan ongoing assessment in collaboration with education department.

·   Support for strategic planning by providing information, especially resource planning.

· Demonstrate advanced nursing through the application of evidence-based nursing practices.

·       Continuous monitoring and patient care quality.

·       Is a clinical and administrative resource person for staff, must learn and teach new clinical practices.

·       Oversee the effective, efficient use of equipment and materials. .

·       Counsel staff as necessary, verbally and in writing maintaining the necessary documentation in accordance with hospital policy.

·       Accomplish routine safety checks and monitor preventive maintenance of all medical equipment in the unit/floor in collaboration with Biomed Engineers.

·       Supervises all staff, including non-nursing staff assigned to the unit.

Management Responsibilities:

·        Must know the objectives, vision and mission statement of (..................).

·       Must strive for excellence in health care delivery through realization of the objectives at unit level.

·       Know and respect the lines of authority according to the nursing organization structure.

·       Direct and supervise unit nurses effectively.

·       Has the authority to delegate her responsibilities to the AHN when not on duty.

Clinical Governance:

·       Ensure accurate documentation of all patient events and clinical interventions.

·       Audit patient care daily to ensure compliance with clinical pathways.

·       Document and report all variances in expected clinical outcomes.

·       Monitor, investigate and document all sentinel \events as part of Risk Management and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI’s).

·       Have knowledge of the following policies / protocols:

1.    Infection control

2.    Disaster plan.

3.    Code Blue policy.

4.    Fire and safety (Evacuation plan).

Qualification :

Professional Requirements:

   ·       Must be registered with the Egyptian Nurses Union or Nursing Council or Association and International Council o0f Nurses (ICN).

    · Must be registered with the Egyptian Union the nurse or the nursing council or association in the country of origin.

Education:

   ·       BSN, Technical Institute or Diploma Nurse

   ·       With 3-5 years experience.

Experience:

   ·       At least 2-3 years experience as Head Nurse or assistant head nurse or charge nurse in the same area of specialty.

Skills:

   ·       Good English skill is important.

   ·       Good communication skills and computer literacy.

   ·       Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.

   ·       Critical thinking skills are necessary.  

Training:

   ·       Must attend 50 hrs of mandatory in-service training in a contractual year.

   ·       Uphold and support the mission statement and vision of (..................).

   ·       BLS certified, ACLS is preferred.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

 · Follow the appropriate communication channels according to the organizational chart of the department.

    ·       Must be able to communicate effectively both writing and in orally.

   ·       Ability to work effectively with other members of the care team and support services and efficient patient care.

   ·       Must be have critical thinking skills and innovative.

   ·       Always promote good rapport in the unit to maintain teamwork.

   ·       Act as patient advocate and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

Required Competencies: -

All of basic nursing competency in addition to the following specific competency:

     1-    Chemotherapy Administration.

     2-    Port Cath Needle Insertion.

     3-    Port Cath Needle Removing.
