Job Description Department: Nursing Title: NICU Head Nurse
Reports to:Area Supervisor, House supervisor. Accountable to:Area Supervisor, House supervisor, ADON, DON. Job Summary: NICU Head nurse is the personnel who supervise,
coordinate and evaluate a variety of nursing activities, to effectively provide
high quality of critically ill neonate and supervise nursing care on ventilated
baby. Responsibilities and duties: ·
Insure attendance and the punctuality of nursing staff,
according to (.......) policy. · Attend daily morning Endorsement, receive patient, unit,
equipment from the night shift. · Receive, coordinate, and follow up all of orders, diagnostic procedure, lab tests, and investigation required for the patients, to insure high quality of patient care and efficiency of services. · Make nurses duties and assignments with proper ratio depending on acuity level of the patient, and staff knowledge and skills, and according to (.......) policy, to provide a high Standard of care service within the hospital policy. · Attend daily patients’ rounds with assigned staff to ensure that staff implements all nursing procedures, duties, and patients care is carried out as directed in accordance with physician's instructions. · Monitor medication preparation, and administration, and ensure safe protection of medications and narcotics according to (.......) policy. And reporting medication error. · Request needed supplies and equipment’s for unit, and ensure downloading of the supplies to insure effective, efficient use of equipment and materials.' · Oversee the effective, efficient use of ICU equipment and materials, by Accomplishment of routine checks, and monitor maintenance of equipment in the unit by sending to biomedical department. · Supervise documentation of staff nurses, and insure accuracy of medical record. · Coordinate
admission, patient transfer inside and outside the ward with other departments to ensure continuity of care. · Accompany doctor on rounds and keep abreast of special orders regarding patients. · Participate in department-specific orientation for new department employees and learn about new clinical practices to ensure safe practice for all nurses. · Participate in monthly executive committees and update employees on emerging issues. · Investigates and resolves complaints
and counseling of staff and refers unusual problems to superior. · Conduct monthly staff meetings
and Keep written protocols. · Prepare monthly staffing plans and ensure staffing levels and skill mix match patient care needs. · Conduct an annual performance review and review of all staff in collaboration with the nursing education team. · Assess staff learning needs and plan ongoing assessment in collaboration with the Education Department. · Monitor the maintenance program
of all medical equipment’s. · Supervises all staff, including
non-nursing staff assigned to the unit. · Provide guidance to her staff
and counseling as required and document same in nursing corrective action form.
· Helps with strategic planning by providing information, especially resource planning. Management responsibilities:
· Must know the objectives, vision and
mission statement of (.......). · Must strive for excellence in health
care delivery through realization of the objectives at unit level. · Know and respect the lines of communication
according to the nursing organizational structure. · Direct and supervise unit head nurses
and team leaders effectively. · Has the authority to delegate her
responsibilities to the most capable SRN when not on duty. · Attend meetings as required by management. · Must have good organizational skills. Clinical Governance:· Ensure accurate documentation
of all patient events and clinical interventions. · Audit patient care daily to ensure
compliance with clinical pathways. · Document and report all variances
in expected clinical outcomes. · Monitor, investigate and document
all sentinel \events as part of Risk Management and Patient Safety Indicators
(PSI’s). · Have knowledge of the following
policies / protocols: 1.
Infection control 2.
Disaster plan. 3.
Code Blue policy. 4.
Fire and safety (Evacuation plan). Qualification:
Professional Requirements: · Must be registered with the Egyptian Nurses Union or the Nursing Council or Association of the country of origin. · Must practice nursing within the scope set by the Egyptian Union and the International Council of Nurses (ICD). Education: · BSN, Technical Institute or Diploma Nurse · With 3-5 years’ experience. Experience: · At least 2-3 years’ experience as Head Nurse or
assistant head nurse or charge nurse in the same area of specialty. Skills: · Good English skill is important. · Good communication skills and computer literacy.
· Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.
· Critical thinking skills are necessary. Training: · Must attend 50 hrs. of mandatory in-service training
in a contractual year. · Uphold and support the mission statement and vision
of (.......). · BLS certification is mandatory. · PALS &ACLS is preferred. Communication and Interpersonal skills:· Use the proper chain of command
on all nursing related matter according the nursing organizational chart. · Investigates and resolves complaints,
and Communicate to Supervisors problems experienced at unit level with staff,
patients, and visitors and propose remedial action. · have good interpersonal relationship
with other departments · Promote effective working relationship
between unit staff and support services staff. · Follow-up on identified security
problems. · Must have skills of problem solving
and have critical thinking. Dress Code:· According to (.......) Policy. Required Competencies: 1- Admission in NNICU. 2- Admission of New Born to
Nursery from Labor room. 3- Baby Bath. 4- Bottle Feeding. 5- Care of Baby under Phototherapy. 6- Evaluation Checklist for
Essential Newborn Care at Birth. 7- Eye Care. 8- Newborn IV Line Placement. 9- Blood collection through Heel Prick. 10- Care of Baby On Radiant Warmer. 11- Diaper Care. |
