Job Summary:
Head nurse is the personnel who supervise and evaluate a variety of nursing activities to effectively provide high quality of patient care; head nurse has three main roles: patient care management to ensure that patient total needs are met, staff management to guide and evaluate and correct staff nurses in their practices, floor management to ensure smooth running of process to fulfill the hospital goals.
Responsibilities and duties:
· Insure attendance and the punctuality of
nursing staff, according to (..........) policy.
· Receiving, coordinating and tracking all orders, diagnostic procedures,
laboratory tests and investigation required for the patient, to insure high
quality of patient care and efficiency of services.
· Make nurses duties and assignments with proper
ratio depending on acuity level of the patient, and staff knowledge and skills,
and according to (..........) policy, to provide a high Standard of nursing service within hospital policy.
· Attend daily patients’ rounds with assigned
staff to ensure that staff implements all nursing procedures, duties, and patients
care is carried out as directed in accordance with physician's instructions.
· Monitor medication preparation, and
administration, and Ensure safe protection of medications and narcotics
according to (..........) policy. And reporting medication error
· Request needed supplies and equipment’s for floor,
and Ensure staff downloads the supplies correctly to insure effective,
efficient use of equipment and materials.
· Supervise documentation of staff nurses, and
insure that all documentations are accurate, and completed according to (……….)
policy
· Coordinate admission, transfers of the patient
in and out of the floor with other departments, to insure continuity of care.
· Accompanies the doctor on rounds and keeps abreast of special orders regarding patients.
· Learn and teach new clinical practices.
· Participate in specific floor orientation of
new staff in the floor, and learn new clinical practices, to insure safe
practice for all nursing staff.
· Participate in monthly executive committees and update staff on new issues.
· Investigates and resolves complaints or escalates unusual issues to a manager.
·
Hold
monthly staff meetings and keep written minutes.
·
Prepare monthly staffing plans to ensure staffing levels and skill mix match patient care needs.
· Attend staff performance evaluation, Implement
remedial action as indicated.
·
Assess learning needs of staff, and planning continuous
evaluation in collaboration of education department.
·
Supervises all staff, including non-nursing staff assigned to
the floor.
·
Assist in strategic planning by providing information,
particularly in resource planning.
·
Maintain floor records on clinical and other data and submit
reports to CNO.
·
Provide a high standard of nursing service within the
hospital’s policy.
·
Attend patients’ rounds with assigned staff daily.
·
Demonstrate advanced nursing through the
application of evidence-based nursing practices.
·
Continuously monitor the quality of patient care.
· Is a clinical and administrative resource person for staff,
must learn and teach new clinical practices.
·
Ensure safe custody of medications and narcotics according to
(..........) policy.
· Create monthly staffing plans, to ensure
staffing and skill mix meet patient care needs. Ensure
hospital policies and procedures are current and adhered to.
·
Responsible for in-service and floor orientation in
collaboration with Nurse Educator and Clinical Instructor.
·
Process leaves requests in a timely manner and in accordance
with hospital policy.
·
Oversee the effective, efficient use of equipment and
materials.
·
Attend staff performance evaluation. Implement remedial
action as indicated.
· Counsel staff as necessary, verbally and in writing
maintaining the necessary documentation in accordance with hospital policy.
· Ensure staff implements the procedures for charging patients
in the required time frame.
·
Maintain floor records on clinical and other data and submit
reports to CNO.
·
Helps with strategic planning by providing information,
particularly resource planning.
·
Accomplish routine safety checks and monitor preventive
maintenance of all medical equipment in the floor in collaboration with Biomed
Engineers.
· Supervises all staff, including non-nursing staff assigned to the floor.
Management Responsibilities:
·
Must know the objectives, vision and mission statement of (..........).
· Must strive for excellence in health care delivery through
realization of the objectives at floor level.
· Know and respect the lines of authority according to the
nursing organization structure.
·
Direct and supervise floor nurses effectively.
· Has the authority to delegate her responsibilities to the AHN when not on duty.
Clinical Governance:
·
Ensure accurate documentation of all patient events and
clinical interventions.
·
Audit patient care daily to ensure compliance with clinical
pathways.
·
Document and report all variances in expected clinical
outcomes.
· Monitor, investigate and document all sentinel \events as
part of Risk Management and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI’s).
·
Have knowledge of the following policies / protocols:
1.
Infection control
2.
Disaster plan.
3.
Code Blue policy.
4.
Fire and safety (Evacuation plan).
Qualification :
Professional Requirements:
· Must be registered with the Egyptian Nurses Union or Nursing Council or Association in country of
origin.
· Must practice nursing within the scope of
practice as determined by the Egyptian Syndicate and International Council of
Nurses (ICN).
Education:
· BSN, Technical Institute or Diploma Nurse
· With 3-5 years experience
Experience:
· At least 2-3
years experience as Head Nurse or assistant head nurse or charge
nurse in the same area of specialty
Skills:
· Good English skills are important.
· Good communication skills and computer
literacy.
· Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.
· Critical thinking skills are necessary.
Training:
· Must attend 50 hrs of mandatory in-service training in a contractual year.
· Must have BLS certification, ACLS is an advantage.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
· Follow
the appropriate communication channels according to the organizational chart
of the department.
· to speak efficiently orally and in writing.
· Be able
to liaise with other members of the Heath Care Team and support services for
effective and efficient patient care.
· Must be
innovative and able to think critically.
· Always
promote good rapport in the floor to maintain teamwork.
· Act as
patient advocate and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
