Job Description Department: Nursing Title: Dialysis Head Nurse
Reports To:
Area Supervisor, House supervisor.
Accountable to:
Area Supervisor, House supervisor, ACNO and CNO.
Collaborates with:
Infection Control and Biomedical departments.
Job summary:
Manages the overall operations of nursing services at the dialysis unit and assures the safe, efficient, and therapeutic nursing management of the end stage renal disease patient and provide training to dialysis staff nurses.
Responsibilities and duties:
· Insure attendance and the punctuality of nursing
staff, according to (..................) policy.
·
Providing a high level of nursing service within the hospital policy.
· Insure accurate
assessment and reassessment for all patients on a regular basis according to
management protocols of dialysis.
· Make duties and assignments depending on staff knowledge and
skills, and provide a high standard of nursing service
within the hospital’s policy.
· Oversee the effective, efficient use of
dialysis equipment and materials, by Accomplish routine safety checks and
monitor maintenance of all equipment in the unit, and keep the relevant
documentation.
· Insure
the correct application of sterilization for all equipment, and supervise the
cleaning and disinfection of dialysis machines between patients.
· Ensure
provision of good quality filters for the machines.
· Review
the care plans of the patient during dialysis as the need arises.
· Identifies
emergency situations and institutes corrective actions in efficient
manner.
· Supervise documentation of staff nurses, and
insure accuracy of medical record.
· Keep
updated records of all regular patients in order to monitor their progress.
· Ensure
the crash cart is checked every shift.
· Ensure
that all the supplies used are charged to patients prior to discharge.
· Ensure
patients get appointments for their next session of dialysis.
· Supervise
environmental hygiene within the unit through collaboration with support
services.
· Monitor
the water purification process and keep documentation.
· Plan
unit teaching programs relevant to RDU and keep training records of all the
staff.
· Request needed supplies and equipment for unit, and ensure
downloading of the supplies to insure effective, efficient use of equipment and
materials.
· Participate in departmental orientation of new departmental staff and learn about new clinical practices, to insure safe practice
for all nursing staff.
· Investigates and resolves complaints and counseling of staff
and refers unusual problems to superior.
· Conduct staff meetings on a monthly basis and keep written
minutes.
· Create monthly staffing plans to ensure staffing levels and skill mix match patient care needs.
· Participate in monthly leadership committees and educate employees on emerging issues.
· Conduct an annual performance assessment and review of all staff in collaboration
with Nursing education team.
· Assess learning wants of staff, and designing continuous analysis unitedly of education department.
· Ensure staff implements the
procedures for charging patients in the required time frame.
·
Maintain unit records on clinical and other data and submit
reports.
·
Helps
with strategic planning by providing information,
particularly resource planning.
· Prepare Health Education programs for patient education with the assistance of the Education Department.
Management Responsibilities:

Must know the objectives, vision and mission statement of (..................)

Must strive for excellence in health care delivery through
realization of the objectives at unit level.
· Know and respect the lines of authority according to the
nursing organization structure. Demonstrate
a high degree of competency and accountability in caring for patients receiving
dialysis.
· Be able
to interpret biochemical and blood values and communicate information to
treating physician promptly.
·
Direct and supervise unit nurses effectively.
·
Has the authority to delegate her responsibilities to the AHN
when not on duty.
·
Have the
knowledge to recognize clinical complications and emergencies and how to
respond.
·
Know all
the protocols of hemodialysis treatment.
· Know the infection control protocol for preventing cross infection among chronic dialysis patient and make sure the infection control policies are strictly followed by all the staff under her direct supervision, including support services staff.
Clinical Governance:
·
Ensure accurate documentation of all patient events and
clinical interventions.
·
Audit patient care daily to ensure compliance with clinical
pathways.
·
Document and report all variances in expected clinical
outcomes.
· Monitor, investigate and document all sentinel \events as
part of Risk Management and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI’s).
·
Have knowledge of the following policies / protocols:
1.
Infection control
2.
Fire and safety plan, Disaster plan.
3. Code Blue policy.
Qualification :
Professional Requirements:
· Must be registered with the Egyptian Nurses Union or Nursing Council or Association in country of
origin.
· Must practice nursing within the scope of practice as determined by the Egyptian Syndicate and International Council of Nurses (ICN).
Education:
· BSN, Technical Institute or Diploma Nurse
· With 3-5 years’ experience
Experience:
· At least 2-3 years’ experience as Head Nurse or assistant head nurse or charge nurse in the same area of specialty.
Skills:
· Good English skill is important.
· Good communication skills and computer
literacy.
· Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.
· Critical thinking skills are necessary.
Training:
· Must attend 50 hrs. of mandatory in-service
training in a contractual year.
· Uphold and support the mission statement and
vision of (..................)
· BLS Certification.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
· Follow the appropriate communication channels according to the organizational chart
of the department.
· Must be ready to communicate effectively each orally and in writing.
· Be able to liaise with other members of the
Heath Care Team and support services for effective and efficient patient care.
· Must be innovative and have essential thinking skills.
· Always promote a good relationship in the unit to maintain teamwork.
· Act as patient advocate and maintain patient
confidentiality at all times.
