Job Description       Department: Nursing      Title: Critical Care Staff Nurse


Reports To:

Charge nurse, and Head Nurse.

Accountable to:

Head Nurse, Area Supervisor , Nursing Supervisor, ACNOCNO

Job Summary: 

    The critical care nurse is under the supervision of the head nurse or head nurse. She/he provides total nursing care to her/his patients. This involves planning, administering and evaluation the nursing care of her/his patients. She/he administers all treatments and medications and maintains complete and accurate records of nursing assessments and nursing care. The nurse should also be experienced in identifying complications in the ICU patient. She/he is responsible to learn how to operate all technological equipment utilized in the unit. The functions performed require judgment based upon the application of scientific knowledge and are guided by the established philosophy and policies of the hospital.

Responsibilities and duties:

Receive an outgoing shift report at the end of the shift.

Check all patients with the nurse from the previous shift.

Provide direct care to assigned patients.

Capture medical history, summarize data, and establish nursing diagnoses/patient care needs.

Observe and record signs, symptoms, and behaviors, as well as the physiological standing of                   patients;

Be familiar with using all technological equipment in the intensive care unit as mechanical                       ventilator, cardiac monitor, infusion pumps, defibrillator, IABP, pace maker …etc. 

Perform specific nursing interventions on assigned patients consistent with the stated medical                  plan of care.

Perform admission, discharge and transfer procedures and assist others with patient activities. and            care.

Execute physician's orders for all assigned patients; safely and properly administer medications               and treatments.

Performing or assisting others in performing proper aseptic techniques, isolation procedures                     interval, and infection control measures.

Document care of all assigned Patient Records.

Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of patient information and records at all times.

Evaluate the care provided, including patient response.

Demonstrate ability, understanding and assess patient compliance instructions. and health care                 teaching.

Establish dedicated clinical pathways for management in collaboration with the Department of                 Education span specific conditions in the unit.

Know the following protocols: 

- Disaster Policy. 

- Code blue policy. 

- Fire safety policy. 

- Infection control policies.

Educational Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Head Nurse and Clinical Instructor, the Nurse will:

Contribution to the identification of training needs relevant to the clinical field.

Join the clinical orientation of all new nurses and support staff.

Develop leadership skills to act as an effective role model.

Take duty on your very own getting to know and improvement needs

Attend all required in-services training programs.

Stay current with required training such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life             Support (ACLS) if possible.

Communication and Interpersonal skills: 

Follow proper communication channels in accordance with department organizational chart. 

Must be capable of speak successfully each orally and in writing.

Maintain professional appearance and dress code.

Wear Identification badge when working.

Comply with policies of absence or tardiness.

Must be innovative and able to assume critically

Always promote good unit rapport to maintain teamwork.  

Qualifications :

  Education: 

• B.S.N, Technical Institute of Nursing or Diploma in Nursing.

Experience :-

1 year of critical care experience preferred.

Training :-

Must be registered with the Egyptian Nurses Union and/or Profession Registration Agency of origin. 

50 hours of training required per year. 

BLS certification is mandatory &ACLS is preferred.
