Reports to:

Head Nurse and Area Supervisor

Accountable to:

HeadNurse, Nursing Supervisor, ADON &DON.

Job summary:

    The Assistant Head Nurse is responsible for the clinical operation of their designated areas. They should effectively assist the head nurse in planning, managing and deploying staff as necessary in their area of work. Must work closely with relevant medical staff and other hospital departments. You will be responsible for overseeing clinical resources to ensure optimal use for the patient is achieved.

Responsibilities and duties:

Nursing Practice/Patient Care:

·       Provide high quality care services within hospital policy.

·    Provides your staff with practical clinical guidance on patient care issues in line with Directive and procedure guidelines of the department.

·       Attend patients' rounds with assigned staff daily.

·   Demonstrate advanced nursing through the application of evidence-based nursing practices.

·       Continuously monitor the standard of patient care.

·       Is a clinical and administrative resource person for staff, must learn and teach new clinical practices.

·     Assist the head nurse in preparing monthly staff schedules, ensuring staffing levels and skills mix meet patient care needs in the absence of the head nurse.

·       Ensure hospital policies and procedures are current and adhered to.

·       Assist Head Nurse to provide in-service and unit / floor orientation in collaboration with Nurse Educator & Clinical Instructor.

Management:

·       Maintain current professional registration.  

·       Participates in promoting good relationships with patients, staff, medical staff, visitors and their peers by using good communication skills.

·       Identifies present and potential clinical and nonclinical needs of the department and assists the Head Nurse in formulating courses of action to meet those needs using historical data and resource management.

·     Process leaves requests in a timely manner and in accordance with hospital policy in the absence of the head nurse.

·       Oversee the effective, efficient use of equipment and materials.

·    Counsel staff as necessary, verbally and in writing maintaining the necessary documentation in the absence of the Head Nurse.

·     Ensure staff implements the procedures for charging patients in the required time frame.

·       Maintain unit records on clinical and other data and submit reports.

·  Assist the Head Nurse to accomplish routine safety checks and monitor preventive maintenance of all medical equipment in the unit/floor.

·       Have knowledge of the following policies / protocols

1.    Disaster plan.

2.    Code blue policy

3.    Fire and Safety. (Evacuation plan).

4.    General hospital security policies of (...................).

Educational Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Clinical instructor the nurse will:

·   Assist the head nurse and the clinical instructor to provide a comprehensive orientation program for all new staff and assist in evaluating their performance at the end of their probationary period.

·      Continues to improve his own clinical knowledge and skills by treating patients care and reading the current Nursing literature provided.

·  Promotes staff participation in Continuing Education and updates their knowledge & skills by completing the set number of hours required as per the Nursing Education Department policy.

·       Provide feedback to the head nurse & Clinical instructor in the compilation of proficiency assessments for new nurses in the clinical setting.

·       Contribution to the determination of the training needs relevant to the clinical area.

·       Participate in the clinical orientation of all new nurses and support staff.

·       develop leadership skills to act as an effective role model.

·       Take duty to your personal mastering and improvement needs.

·       Attend all required in-services training programs.

·    Keep up to date with mandatory training such as Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS is an advantage.

Interpersonal Skills / Communication:

·       Use the proper chain of command on all nursing related matters.

·   Communicate to Head Nurse and Supervisors problems experienced at Unit level with staff, patients, and visitors and propose remedial action.

·       Is a role model for good interpersonal relationships which other departments.

·     Promote effective working relationships between Unit staff and support services staff.

·       Follow-up on identified security problems.

·       Must have critical thinking skills.

Professional Development:

·   Ensure compulsory educational lectures are attended by self and staff in the unit.

·  Attend management in – service lectures.

·   Assist the Head Nurse to identify the educational needs of staff and coordinates with the nursing education Department.

Qualifications:

Education:

         ·        BSN, Technical Institute of Nursing or credentials in Nursing.

Experience:

         ·       1-year experience in the same area is preferable.

Dress Code:
