Description Department: Nursing Title: ER Head Nurse
Reports To:
Area Supervisor, House supervisor.
Accountable to:
Area Supervisor, house supervisor, ACNO and CNO.
Job Summary :
Directs nursing service activities in the emergency room and triage room. Delegates responsibilities to auxiliary and emergency room staff nurses; and supervises preparation and maintenance of emergency room and equipments to insure high quality services.
Responsibilities and duties:

Insure attendance and the punctuality of nursing
staff, according to (HOSPITAL NAME) policy.
·
Make nurses duties and assignments with proper ratio
depending of staff knowledge and skills, and according to (HOSPITAL NAME)
policy, to provide a high standard of nursing service
within the hospital’s policy.
· Insure Triage of patients in ER according to
severity of illness or injury.
· Delegate competent RN to prepare the triage
area on every shift.
· Supervise the preparation of the Triage Room.
· Make sure the crash cart is checked on every
shift and after each code blue.
· Replenish medical supplies on
the crash cart and Request needed supplies and equipments for unit, and ensure
uploading of the supplies to insure effective, efficient use of equipment and
materials.
· Ensure safe protection of
medications and narcotics according to (HOSPITAL NAME) policy. And reporting
medication error
· Make sure that all the staff follows the
clinical pathways for management of specific emergency situations.
· Ensure compliance with infection control
policies especially regarding blood spillages and sharps.
· Regulate the flow of staff and visitors in the
triage area.
· Receive, coordinate, and follow up all of
orders, diagnostic procedure, science laboratory tests, and investigation
needed for the patient, to insure prime quality of patient care and potency of
services..

Supervise
documentation of staff nurses, and insure accuracy of medical record
· Coordinate admission,
transfers of the patient in and out of the ER
with other departments, to insure continuity of care.
· Make sure that all examination rooms are kept
clean and ready to receive patients.
·
Oversee
the effective, efficient use of ER equipment and materials, by Accomplishment
of routine checks, and monitor
maintenance of equipment in the ER by sending to biomedical department
· Demonstrate good nursing interpersonal
relationship & leadership.
· Make sure all equipment trolleys and stretchers
are disinfected and ready for use, according to policy. (I.V. sands as well as
examination lamps).
· All CSSD trays are returned for sterilization
on regular basis (used trays should be returned immediately).
· Make sure that all relevant consent is obtained
for Invasive Procedures and Suturing of minor wounds done in ER.
· Inform relatives in case of emergency surgery
and obtain consent from legal guardian in case of unconscious patient.
· Monitor pain control and sedation protocols in
collaboration with the ER medical team.
· Keep accurate documentation of all clinical
interventions and patient events that occur in ER.
· Make sure ambulances are cleaned according to
protocol.
· Make sure ambulance calls are documented and
ambulances are dispatched promptly with the paramedic team.
· Collaborate with the Paramedic Team in ensuring
that all ambulances are adequately stocked with supplies.
· Participate in specific unit orientation of
latest staff within the unit, and learn new clinical follows, to insure safe
practice for all nursing staff.
· Attend monthly leadership committees, and
inform workers regarding new problems
· Investigates and resolves
complaints and counseling of staff and refers unusual problems to superior.
· Conducting team of workers
conferences on a month-to-month foundation and hold written minutes
· Prepare monthly staff
schedules, making certain staffing levels and skills combine meet patient care
needs.
· Do conditional and yearly
performance appraisal of all workers with the collaboration of nursing
education team.
· Assess learning needs of
staff, and planning continuous evaluation in collaboration of education
department.
· Monitor the maintenance
program of all medical equipments.
· Supervises all staff,
including non-nursing staff assigned to the unit.
· Provide guidance to her staff
and counseling as required and document same in nursing corrective action form.
· Assist in strategic designing by providing input particularly in resource planning.
Clinical Governance:
· Ensure accurate documentation
of all patient events and clinical interventions.
· Audit patient documents prior to transferring
patients to the floor or unit, to ensure compliance with clinical pathways.
· Document and report all
variances in expected clinical outcomes.
· Keep statistics of all the cases seen in ER and
review management protocols with the ER manager when necessary.
· Monitor, investigate and
document all sentinel /events as part of Risk Management and Patient Safety
Indicators (PSI’s).
· Have knowledge of the
following policies / protocols:
1.
Infection control
2.
Disaster plan.
3.
Code Blue policy.
4. Fire and safety (Evacuation plan).
Management Responsibilities:
· Must know the objectives, vision and mission statement of (HOSPITAL
NAME).
· Must strive for excellence in
health care delivery through realization of the objectives at unit level.
· Know and respect the lines of
authority according to the nursing organization structure.
· Direct and supervise unit
nurses effectively.
· Has the authority to delegate
her responsibilities to the AHN when not on duty
· Liaise with clinical instructor in checking
staff competencies.
· Keep training records for all staff.
Qualification :
Professional Requirements:
· Must be registered with the Egyptian Syndicate
of Nurses or Nursing Council or Association in country of origin.
· Must practice nursing within the scope of practice as determined by the Egyptian Syndicate and International Council o0f Nurses (ICN).
Education:
· BSN, Technical Institute or Diploma Nurse
· With 3-5 years experience
Experience:
· At least 2-3 years experience as Head Nurse or assistant head nurse or charge nurse in the same area of specialty.
Skills:
· Good English skills are important.
· Good communication skills and computer
literacy.
· Ability to liaise and co-ordinate effectively.
· Critical thinking skills are necessary.
Training:
· Must attend 50 hrs of mandatory in-service
training in a contractual year.
·
Paramedic Certificate an advantage.
·
Must have BLS accreditation, adult and pediatric (ACLKS an
advantage).
· Membership with an organization of International Emergency Nurse Practitioners an advantage.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
·
Follow the correct channels of communication consistent with
the department structure chart.
· must be capable of speak successfully verbally
and in writing.
· Be able to intercede with different members of
the Heath Care Team and support services for effective and economical patient
care.
· should be innovative and have important
thinking skills.
· Always promote good rapport in the unit to
maintain teamwork.
· Act as patient advocate and maintain patient confidentiality at all times
